This blog is a personal reflection on my journey as a business owner. While it’s a bit more behind-the-scenes than our usual posts, I hope it gives you a glimpse of the values we hold dear at Puppy Poo Patrol: community, respect, and always striving to do our best.
Lately, I’ve had numerous friends, family members, and even clients reaching out to me every time they spot a new competitor in the pet waste removal industry. I’ve received countless messages, calls, and texts with the latest updates on who’s offering a similar service in the Downriver area. It’s heartwarming to know that so many people care about my business and want to keep me informed. Their support means the world to me, and it’s also what inspired me to write this blog post.
As a business owner, one of the most nerve-wracking experiences is watching new competitors enter the market. It’s natural to feel a mix of emotions—concern, frustration, and maybe even fear—because, at the end of the day, competition affects the bottom line. More businesses in the same industry mean more choices for customers, and sometimes, that means long-standing businesses like mine experience slowed growth or loss of clients. That’s just the reality of it, and I won’t pretend otherwise.
However, despite the challenges that competition brings, I want to make one thing very clear: I am not opposed to competition. In fact, I welcome it. I truly believe there is enough dog poop in the Downriver area to go around!
The growing number of competitors actually signals something positive—the increasing demand for pet waste removal services in our area. As more pet owners realize how much easier it is to rely on professionals to handle the less glamorous aspects of pet care, the industry naturally expands. This growth isn't something to be feared; it's a reflection of a thriving pet-loving community that wants clean yards without the hassle.
Why Competition Isn’t a Bad Thing
It’s easy to view competitors as threats, but the truth is, competition pushes businesses to be better. It forces us to continually improve, refine our services, and ensure that we are providing the absolute best experience for our clients. Without competition, there would be no reason to grow, adapt, or innovate.
I have been serving the Downriver community since 2019, and in that time, I’ve seen the impact that pet waste removal services can have on busy families, elderly pet owners, and people who simply don’t want to deal with the chore. The fact that more companies are entering the industry means that more pet owners recognize the value of this service, and that’s a good thing for everyone.
Respecting—And Even Working With—Competitors
Over the years, I’ve gotten to know some of the other pet waste removal business owners who have been around as long as I have. We’ve built a mutual respect for one another, understanding the hard work and dedication it takes to run a business in this industry. Some of them have even become friends. We may technically be competitors, but that doesn’t mean we have to be rivals.
In fact, we often work closely together. If my schedule is completely booked and I can’t take on a new client, I have no problem referring them to one of my trusted competitors—and they do the same for me. If a potential client is outside of our service area, we’ll happily refer them to one of our friendly competitors who can serve them. At the end of the day, the most important thing is that pet owners get the service they need. We all recognize that supporting each other strengthens our industry as a whole, and it ensures that no pet owner is left without help just because one company is at capacity or out of their service area.
Supporting Small Businesses, Even When They Are Competitors
One of the biggest reasons I don’t view competition negatively is because I know what it takes to start and run a small business. It’s not easy. There’s a lot of risk, long hours, and plenty of trial and error. I respect anyone who decides to take that leap and build something from the ground up. So, to the new pet waste removal businesses popping up—I truly wish you success.
I believe that businesses can compete without tearing each other down. There is room for all of us, and at the end of the day, clients will choose the service that best fits their needs. That’s how business works, and I have confidence in the relationships I’ve built with my customers over the years.
A Message to My Clients
If you’ve new, or if you have been with me for a while, I want to take a moment to say thank you. Your loyalty means the world, and I don’t take it for granted. I will continue to show up, do my best, and provide the level of service you’ve come to expect.
And if you’re new to the idea of hiring a pet waste removal service—whether it’s from me or another company—I encourage you to give it a try! It’s one of those small conveniences that can make a huge difference in your day-to-day life.
At the end of the day, competition is a natural part of business, and while it may be intimidating at times, I choose to see it as motivation. It keeps me on my toes, ensures I never become complacent, and reminds me why I do what I do.
So, to the new businesses out there: welcome to the industry. I wish you all the best.
And to my valued clients: I appreciate you more than you know.
Let’s keep Downriver’s yards clean—together!
